Today’s message is from Pastor Adam.

Living from Overflow

Opening Setup: Why is it important to live from overflow? What does that look like in our everyday life?

A deep friendship with God is what fuels your healthy relationships.

The depth of your discipleship is reliant on the depth of your relationship with the Father.

The Problem: We tend to focus more on what we are doing rather than who we are becoming.

“The most important thing about a man is not what he does, but who he becomes.”

  • Dallas Willard

Burnout is an emotional, physical, social, or spiritual exhaustion in which a person loses interest in a particular activity and even in life in general.

What causes burnout for you?

Distractions

Social acceptance

Busyness – lack of priority

Heavy focus on school, work, money, etc.

Influence

Could be good things too

Burnout happens when you’re operating for rest not from rest.

“Relying on God has to begin all over again every day as if nothing had yet been done.” – C.S. Lewis

Let’s define rest: What we’re talking about tonight is not physical or mental rest. This isn’t getting a full 8 hours of sleep or binge watching OBX instead of writing a paper because you need a break. We’re talking about a Spiritual rest.

The Answer:

12 Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name and you have found favor with me.’ 13 If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.”

14 The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

15 Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. 16 How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?”

17 And the Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.”

18 Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.” Exodus 33:12-18

11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience. Hebrews 4:11

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11:28-30 The Message

His presence and His rest precedes His glory.

Rest is a posture of our heart and a piece of our identity in Christ. It’s something that only the Holy Spirit can offer us. A call of obedience to continuously return to Him.

Jesus says we should come to Him. He’s gentle and humble at heart and that’s where rest is found; in Him.

When you’re living in a state of burnout, you don’t have the space to accept the holy spirit into your friendships. You’ll find that your friendships are surface level, basic, not going deeper or hitting the next level. They will be in survival mode because you are in survival mode.

The Challenge:

Rick Warren – “You were made for God and by God, and until you understand that, life will never make sense.”
